Life balance is talked about everywhere these days. How to be a great parent, business owner, partner, friend and still look after yourself all at once is a feat that a lot of people have a lot of different solutions to.
But I believe that balance is flexible. Everyone is different, every day is different and sometimes, change is good.
Everyone manages different commitment and responsibilities in unique ways and can handle different amounts of pressure.
For me personally, the key to balancing my own life is passion and appreciation.
My company Experience Cuba is an Australian run tour company providing private and tailor made travel experiences around Cuba. I began Experience Cuba because of my love of Cuban culture and my passion for sharing it with others. I wanted to allow travellers to see beyond the average tourist’s perception of Cuba and explore the genuine, cultural and bustling Cuba in an immersive experience with a group that feels like family.
Because of how much I adore what I do each day, I am driven to succeed and feel joy in working each day. My two children are being raised with two parents who set an example of ambition, sharing our Cuban culture and bringing strangers into our family and showing them kindness.
With two children, my focus can’t always be on work. I have two little lives to organise as well as my own along with all else that comes with being a parent and homeowner. I’ve found the biggest downfall of prioritising, is that we often forget ourselves.
My love of Experience Cuba allows me to feel self gratification every day, but everyone needs to take some time out and do things for their own health and wellbeing. Here are the three tips I use to organise my business, home and family priorities and still support myself.
- Get an agenda and pre-plan
Before each week, I write down a to-do list of everything that I need done. Within this I prioritise, including lists for what are ‘RIGHT NOW’ chores as well as tasks for long term projects that will be beneficial in the long run.
I include business, home and family tasks in this list so that I can stay on top of everything and if I can’t remember – it’s all written down right there for me to double check!
- Treat yourself as you would treat a business
Included in my weekly planning is allocating time for myself. Often we put our own wellbeing on the backburner, focusing on earning money, the children, the work and making other people happy.
By being disciplined and strictly allocating time for yourself allows you to find peace of mind, take a break from the stress of life and most importantly allows you to reflect and enjoy yourself. After all, if you’re not working hard for yourself and for your family to enjoy life – what are you working for?
- Forget what you DON’T have and appreciate what you DO
For me, growing up in Cuba the economic climate meant we weren’t sure if dinner would be on the table each night. When I’m getting stressed, over worked or upset – I simply open my fridge. I see the food and I remember and appreciate that I have a family that I love, a roof over my head and food to eat.
Sometimes we get lost in the things that we don’t have and we forget what we do have. Ambition is important, but don’t get lost in it.
But most importantly, remember everyone is different. Each person, their circumstances and their skills are UNIQUE. Don’t compare yourself to others, do what works for YOU and most importantly remember what it is you’re working so hard for.
